Roy Keane’s men were a touch unlucky to be behind to Wayne Thomas’s 25-yard rocket at the break, but a lacklustre second half display handed the game to the Saints, Michail Antonio adding to the home side’s lead before Pablo Couñago’s late consolation.

Town faced injury time woe in South Yorkshire for the second time in five days as former Blues loanee Jon Macken’s goal gave Barnsley a 2-1 victory at Oakwell. The Tykes had gone ahead in the first half through Iain Hume, who later smashed a penalty against the bar, Liam Rosenior equalising for the Blues before the break.

Town have announced that chief executive Derek Bowden is to leave the club at the end of the season. Bowden has been with the Blues since the summer of 2002 and helped take the club through the period of administration and the Marcus Evans takeover.
